Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc. is a 501 c3, volunteer based, animal welfare organization
established in 1989 to ensure quality care and treatment of horses through rehabilitation,
humane education and community outreach.
Since it’s beginning in 1989, Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc. has been a place
where children and adults have found enrichment, satisfaction, sadness and purpose
through helping to provide care for unwanted, abused or neglected horses. Since
it’s inception,
DEFHR
has gone from a small non-profit sheltering only a few horses annually, to a full
scale and well respected rescue and rehabilitation facility housing on average 50
– 60 horses at any one point in time. Its budget, and corresponding donations, has
grown from $50,000 annually to over $600,000 over a 10 year period.
Over 500 adults and children volunteer their efforts in helping the Farm to achieve
its mission. Equally as important in its successful growth has been Days End Farm's
increased focus on humane education, both on the local and national levels. As Days
End continues to grow, so does the need for adequate space all the horses and programs
require. The current location, which served us well over the years, is now literally
bursting at the seams, with every square inch in use.

"Whistler" is the second of my drawings that I have completed. I noticed upon completion
of this drawing that Whistler appeared to be smiling, very serendipitous. Many viewers
have commented on the urge to move the stray piece of mane from his eye — do you?
Whistler is a 2 year old Chestnut Thoroughbred Gelding.
He arrived at Days End Farm as a starvation
case, with a Henneke body condition score of 1 out of 9. But this yearling had a
spark of life that made him special and kept him fighting to survive. Whistler spent
months in rehabilitation, slowly gaining weight and muscle. One day, he must have
had a burst of new-found energy, and took off running across the indoor arena. It
was at that point that we knew he would pull through.
Whistler was not given a proper start in life and suffered from an injury that has
left him with permanent scarring and deformation of his back leg.
He will need a special home where someone will just let him be a horse and companion.
He is enjoying his life in the field with the other horses and enjoys running and
taking naps in the sun. This baby was unwanted and starved – now he has a chance
for life and love.

"Lily" is my second drawing for days end. This was her first time out in the sun,
and after about an hour of running around with her other new friend, she was ready
for a nap. I captured a picture of her just as her eyes were getting a little to
heavy.
On December 2, 2006 “Lily’s” fate was unknown as she waited in the womb of her starving
mother “Xandra”. 74 horses in Washington County were impounded by the Humane Society.
Most starving and infested with parasites. Days End Farm
Horse Rescue took the worst
to mend the broken bodies and wounded souls. Xandra was rehabilitated, but the condition
of the foal would remain unknown – had too much damage been done?
On Easter Morning a blessing! A healthy foal was born. Easter’s “Lily” took her
first breath and stood confidently at her healed mother’s side . She received much
love and care in those first weeks. Later, she enjoyed running and napping outside
on a warm day – her first Spring. Lily is a testament to the hard work of many at
Day’s End Farm Horse Rescue.
